South Dakota's Abortion Ban is Back

Casey Murschel, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota

Yes, that’s right. It’s only been a little over two months since South Dakotans soundly defeated Referred Law 6 – South Dakota's egregious ban on abortion – and yet out-of-touch lawmakers are expected to introduce another abortion ban today in Pierre. All but three legislative districts rejected the first rigid and restrictive ban in November, so it’s clear that some legislators refuse to listen.

South Dakotans want to see a different vision for our state – one that allows families to make personal, private decisions without government interference. They sent the message that legislators have to get their priorities in order. Let’s focus on the issues that matter to South Dakotans – education, economic development, and health care, not divisive political games that divide us.

This ban must be stopped immediately.

As a former South Dakota legislator, I saw first hand how anti-choice legislators pushed last year’s ban to the governor’s desk with one goal in mind – to repeal Roe v. Wade. There was never any question that South Dakota was being used as a test case to outlaw abortion nationwide. And, despite a clear rejection from voters, they’re doing it again.

Well, I am tired of South Dakota being used like a Petri dish for anti-choice attacks, and I know you are too. So please, go to the NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota website to find out what you can do to stand up against this ban.

Thank you.

I suggest shanking bob Ellis

But for our more moderate readers,

I think Casey is a mensch for stressing that solidarity with the south Dakota movement is important. (now more than ever, muhaha)

But the grassy grassroots need us, too:
